DWTS Season Premiere Recap: Sean Lowe’s “Effective Pelvic Thrusts”

Dancing with the Stars season 16 has started off with a bang, thanks to ex-bachelor Sean Lowe. I love DWTS, but I have to admit, if Sean wasn’t dancing, I wouldn’t be watching. The cast is full of mostly “stars” I have never heard of or really care about so once we all knew Sean was going to go from the search for love to find his fiancé on The Bachelor to dance star, I knew I had to watch. So, how did everyone do? Compared to last season, the all-star’s of DWTS, this group of stars need a lot of work (especially DL Hughley, noted by the judges).

The 12 dancing duos, who performed the cha-cha, foxtrot or a contemporary dance, got off to a mostly so-so start. Disney channel star Zendaya & her partner, Val got off to a great start with their contemporary dance. Doesn’t hurt that Zendaya has dance experience. The Bachelor Sean Lowe‘s main goal in getting through Monday night’s season premiere of Dancing With the Stars was to “make Catherine proud” — at the very least, he definitely made his bride-to-be blush. Sean, the “hunky, chunky” (Bruno DWTS-Sean-Peta_320x240 Tonioli’s words) and his partner, Peta Murgatroyd tackled the foxtrot as their first dance, but it was a little rough around the edges.  “For a dance virgin, you have a very effective pelvic thrust,” Tonioli told the sparkly red tuxedo-clad Lowe. “It was like Chippendales on the dance floor. You have to put some refinement and finesse into it.”Some people like a bit of rough”, Bruno mentioned during his critique. “I liked it rough”, Carrie Ann Inaba joked, saying “I don’t think I’m alone”, as the crowd cheered in the background. Carrie Ann described Sean’s effort as “a fearless exuberance..and that is going to take you so far in this competition. I bet you will go far.”

Sean wasn’t the only one who needed to refine things. D.L. Hughley (partnered with Cheryl Burke), bombed his first dance, with plenty of criticism from the judges, especially Bruno and Carrie Ann. “You have terminated the cha cha cha. I think you terminated 1,2,3. I don’t think there will be a 4”, Bruno described their first dance as. “You got to go back to work and practice a little harder for next week”, Carrie Ann says. Len made it unanimous. Below is where the stars ranked on the first night:
